At Healthy Kids Nurtured by Nature in North Mackay, we understand that parents and patients often have questions about lip and tongue tie conditions and treatment options. We’ve compiled answers to some of the most common questions to help you make informed decisions about your care.
Understanding Lip & Tongue Ties
What Is a Tie or Restriction?
Everyone has frenula (pronounced “FREN-you-lah”)—the folds of tissue that connect the tongue to the floor of the mouth and the lips to the gums. These tissues become problematic when they restrict normal oral function.
Modern understanding of tongue and lip ties goes beyond just appearance—we evaluate based on movement, function, and the overall working of the mouth. When a frenum limits normal functions, it’s considered restrictive compared to one that allows full range of motion and function.
If My Child Has a Lip Tie, Does That Mean They Will Have a Tongue Tie Too?
A failure of tissue separation during development often affects both the lip and tongue. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean both will require treatment.
Our thorough examination will determine which areas need attention. For breastfeeding infants, the lip nearly always contributes to feeding challenges. For older children, our assessment is based on clinical signs and symptoms. Early evaluation is recommended to prevent potential issues later on.
What Are the Long-Term Implications of Untreated Ties?
While we can’t predict exact outcomes for each individual, research suggests several potential issues may develop when ties remain untreated:
- Altered tongue posture and function
- Improper swallowing patterns
- Restricted jaw development
- Dental misalignment
- Habitual mouth breathing
- Speech difficulties
Early intervention can help prevent these potential long-term challenges.
About Frenectomy Treatment
Is Surgery Necessary for Tongue Tie?
Before determining if a frenectomy is needed, we conduct a comprehensive assessment that includes:
- Visual examination
- Manual palpation (using our hands to feel inside the mouth)
- Functional evaluation
We often recommend consultation with specialists such as a pediatric chiropractor, speech therapist, or lactation consultant before proceeding with treatment. Our goal is to ensure you have all the information needed to make the best decision for your child.
Why Do You Use Laser for Frenectomies?
Our practice uses advanced laser technology for frenectomy procedures because it offers significant advantages:
- Minimal bleeding during the procedure
- Natural sterilisation of the treatment area
- Reduced post-procedure discomfort
- Faster healing time
- Precise treatment with minimal trauma
Laser frenectomies are highly regulated in Queensland, requiring specific training and multiple licenses. The technology requires significant investment and specialised facilities, which is why not all practitioners offer this advanced option.
Do You Use Anesthesia During the Procedure
Our approach to anesthesia depends on the patient’s age and the nature of the procedure:
For Infants:
- Frenectomies are typically performed without injectable anesthesia
- The procedure is brief (3-5 minutes)
- Babies are returned to parents quickly for immediate comfort through breastfeeding
- Our laser has some analgesic effects, though brief discomfort may occur
For Toddlers and Young Children:
- Strong topical gel anesthetic may be applied
- The approach depends on whether the child is still breastfeeding
- We discuss anesthesia options before the procedure
For Older Children and Adults:
- Local anesthetic is used for comfort during the procedure
Is the Procedure Painful?
Some level of discomfort is expected with any surgical procedure. Our approach minimises pain while ensuring effective treatment:
- The procedure itself is very quick
- For infants, any discomfort is brief and typically resolves with immediate feeding
- Older patients receive appropriate anesthesia for comfort
- Post-procedure discomfort is typically minimal and manageable
Will There Be Pain After the Procedure?
Pain levels vary by individual. Most patients experience some mild discomfort, particularly during eating, for a few days following the procedure. Our team provides guidance on managing any discomfort and is available to address concerns that arise during healing.
Treatment Process
How Long Does the Appointment Take?
Each patient is different, and appointment length varies based on individual needs. During your consultation, we’ll provide a time estimate specific to your situation. Our goal is to ensure thorough care while respecting your time.
Are There Restrictions After the Procedure?
We recommend:
- Taking it easy for a couple of days following the procedure
- Being mindful of the treated area for at least 4 weeks
- Avoiding swimming and other medical procedures for 7 days after treatment
Our team will provide specific post-procedure guidelines based on your unique situation.
Can Parents Be Present During the Procedure?
For Infants: For safety reasons, parents will be settled in our comfortable Nurture Room during the actual procedure, which typically takes no more than 15 minutes. Your baby will be returned to your arms as quickly as possible. A team of three professionals ensures the highest level of care during the procedure.
For Children and Adults: One parent or support person is welcome to be present during the procedure.
Support and Insurance
What Other Professional Support Will I Need?
We recommend patients receive manual therapy (chiropractic or osteopathic care) within 24 hours before and 48 hours after treatment, regardless of age. This therapy increases the suppleness and flexibility of the mouth, jaw, head, and neck, helping establish new movement patterns and neural pathways.
For Patients Ages 2+ to Adult: We recommend three weekly oral myofunctional therapy sessions leading up to the release and three weekly sessions afterward for optimal results.
Is Treatment Covered by Insurance?
The procedure is not currently covered by Medicare. Private health insurance coverage varies by provider and level of cover. We recommend checking with your insurer about potential coverage under your extras policy.
