What is a Children’s Dentist?
Our children’s dentist focus on all aspects of children’s dentistry, including preventative and therapeutic orthodontics. Children’s dentists help children from infancy through to adolescents and have the knowledge to care for your child’s teeth, gums and mouth through their various stages of development. But moreover, a children’s dentist is trained in the management of orofacial problems related to medical, behavioural, developmental and physical disabilities.
All of our children’s dentists at KIDS have a special interest in treating children and their oral health and want to provide your child with the care and treatment that is required. At KIDS we spend the time to treat not only the symptoms but the cause.
Our children’s dentist knows how to conduct a dental exam and treat their tiny patients in a way that will make them feel comfortable and not instil fear in them, thus ensuring they are keen to return for the next check-up. Children’s dentist can conduct a dental exam on a 6 month old baby without being invasive or causing too much distress to bub (or mum). A children’s dentist has specially designed tools which have been designed and arranged with children in mind. This means, now adult-sized tools are used in tiny mouths.
Some of the areas in which our children’s dentists are trained in include:
- The demands of physical and psychological growth and development of infants through to young adults;
- The causes and treatment of a vast array of oral problems which children and young adults are prone too. This can include early childhood caries, dental injuries, poorly formed teeth etc.
- The diagnosis and / or treatment of childhood illness and disabilities relating to a child’s facial and oral development.
- Existing research in the area of children’s dentistry as well as be well versed on the practice guidelines and evidence based treatments relating to children’s oral health.
When your children’s dentist suggests that it is time for a dental exam you can be assured they will conduct that exam in a way which is enticing for the child whilst still providing the best possible care. This is because at KIDS we take the time to understand the individual nature of children and how their temperament, family and even school environments can impact them and their oral health.
