If you’ve noticed your little one struggling with breastfeeding or developing a gap between their front teeth, you might be dealing with something called a lip tie. At KIDS – Healthy Kids Nurtured By Nature, we frequently see concerned parents in our Mackay practice asking about this condition, and we’re here to help you understand what it means for your child’s oral health.
What Is a Lip Tie?
So, what is a lip tie exactly? A lip tie occurs when the tissue connecting the upper lip to the gums (called the labial frenulum) is too tight, too thick, or extends too far down the gum line. This restrictive tissue can limit the movement of the upper lip, making it difficult for your child to lift their lip properly.
Think of it like a piece of string that’s tied too tightly, restricting natural movement and causing various complications. While every baby is born with this connective tissue, a problematic lip tie goes beyond what’s considered normal and can interfere with everyday activities like feeding, speaking, and maintaining proper oral hygiene.
Common Lip Tie Symptoms to Watch For
Recognising lip tie symptoms early can make a significant difference in your child’s comfort and development. Here are some signs that Dr Hany (Registered Dentist) and our team look for:
In Infants:
- Difficulty latching during breastfeeding
- Clicking sounds while feeding
- Poor weight gain
- Gassiness or reflux symptoms
- Extended feeding times
- Fatigue or frustration during feeding
In Older Children:
- Speech difficulties, particularly with certain sounds
- A gap between the upper front teeth
- Difficulty cleaning the upper front teeth
- Gum recession or inflammation
- Challenges eating certain foods
How Is Lip Tie Diagnosis Performed?
Lip tie diagnosis is a straightforward process that Dr Hany performs during a gentle examination. During your visit to our Mackay practice, we’ll assess several factors to determine if your child has a restrictive lip tie.
The examination involves gently lifting your child’s upper lip to observe the frenulum attachment. We look at where the tissue connects to the gum, how thick it is, and whether it restricts lip movement. Dr Hany will also check for any blanching (whitening) of the tissue around the attachment site when the lip is lifted, which can indicate a tight restriction.
We also consider your child’s functional symptoms. Sometimes a lip tie might look significant visually but doesn’t cause any problems, while other times a less obvious tie can create considerable difficulties. That’s why we take a comprehensive approach, examining both the physical structure and how it’s affecting your child’s daily life.
Why Early Assessment Matters
If you suspect your child might have a lip tie, we encourage you to schedule an assessment sooner rather than later. Early intervention can prevent complications like dental decay, speech delays, and feeding difficulties that may impact your child’s growth and development.
At KIDS – Healthy Kids Nurtured By Nature, we understand that every child is unique, and we take the time to thoroughly evaluate whether treatment is necessary.
