As a parent, you’re always excited about your baby’s milestones. From their first smile to their first steps, every moment is precious. But have you ever wondered when your little one’s first tooth should make its appearance? Let’s dive into the world of baby teeth and explore the teething timeline together.

The Teething Timeline: What to Expect

Every child is unique, and so is their teething process. However, there’s a general timeline that most babies follow:

4–7 months: The journey begins

Most babies start teething around this time. You might notice increased drooling and a desire to chew on everything in sight. Don’t worry if your little one is a bit fussy — it’s all part of the process!

6–10 months: The first pearly white

Typically, the first tooth to emerge is one of the bottom front teeth (lower central incisors). It’s an exciting moment when you spot that tiny white bud poking through the gum!

8–12 months: More teeth join the party

The upper front teeth (upper central incisors) usually appear next. Your baby’s smile is starting to take shape!

9–16 months: Filling in the gaps

Side teeth, both upper and lower (lateral incisors), begin to emerge. Your baby’s grin is getting wider!

13–19 months: Chewing gets easier

The first molars make their debut, giving your little one more chewing power.

16–23 months: Canines come through

Those pointy canine teeth start to appear, adding character to your child’s smile.

23–33 months: The full set

The second molars complete your toddler’s set of baby teeth. By around the age of 3, most children have all 20 of their primary teeth.

What If My Baby’s Teeth Are Late?

Remember, this timeline is just a guide. Some babies might get their first tooth as early as 3 months, while others might not see any action until after their first birthday. If you’re concerned about your baby’s dental development, it’s always best to consult with a paediatric dentist. They can assess your child’s oral health and provide personalized advice.

Caring for Those Precious Baby Teeth

Even before the first tooth appears, it’s important to start good oral hygiene habits:

  • Gently wipe your baby’s gums with a soft, damp cloth after feedings
  • Once teeth emerge, use a small, soft-bristled toothbrush with a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste
  • Schedule your baby’s first dental visit by their first birthday or within 6 months of their first tooth appearing
